Tin Hedgehog Experiment - Grow Tin Metal Crystals

Metal crystals are intricate and beautiful. They are also surprisingly easy to grow. In this experiment, learn how to grow tin crystals that display a spiky appearance that make them look like a metal hedgehog. Tin Hedgehog Materials 0.5 M tin(II) chloride solution (SnCl2)zinc pellettest tube or vial that is larger in diameter than the zinc The rounded hedgehog shape forms around a pellet of zinc, but you can substitute any chunk of zinc metal. Since the reaction occurs at the surface of the metal, you may also use a galvanized (zinc coated) object in place of the zinc pellet. Grow a Tin Hedgehog Pour tin chloride solution into a vial. Dont fill it up all the way because you need room for the zinc.Add the zinc pellet. Set the vial somewhere stable, so it wont get bumped or jarred.Watch the delicate tin crystals grow! Youll see the beginning of a spiky hedgehog shape in the first 15 minutes, with good crystal formation within an hour. Be sure to take pictures or video of the crystals for later, since the tin hedgehog wont last. Eventually, the weight of the fragile crystals or movement of the container will collapse the structure. The bright metallic shine of the crystals will dull over time, plus the solution will turn cloudy. Chemistry of the Reaction In this experiment, tin(II) chloride (SnCl2) reacts with zinc metal (Zn) to form tin metal (Sn) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) via a substitution or single displacement  reaction: SnCl2   Zn → Sn ZnCl2 Zinc acts as a reducing agent, giving electrons to the tin chloride so that the tin is free to precipitate.  The reaction begins at the surface of the zinc metal. As the tin metal is produced, atoms stack on top of each other in a characteristic form or allotrope of the element. The fern-like shape of the zinc crystals is a characteristic of that metal, so while other types of metal crystals may be grown using this technique, they wont display the same appearance. Grow a Tin Hedgehog Using an Iron Nail Another way to grow tin crystals is using zinc chloride solution and iron. Unless you use a round chunk of iron, you wont get a hedgehog, but you can get the crystal growth, just the same. Materials iron wire or nail0.1 M tin chloridetest tube Note: You dont need to make up a new tin chloride solution. If you have solution from the reaction with zinc, you can use that. The concentration mainly affects how quickly the crystals grow. Procedure Suspend the iron wire or nail in a test tube containing tin chloride.After about an hour, crystals will start to form. You can examine these with a magnifying glass or by removing the wire and looking at the crystals under a microscope.Allow the iron to remain in the solution overnight for more/larger crystals. Chemical Reaction Once again, this is a  simple displacement chemical reaction: Sn2   Fe → Sn Fe2 Safety and Disposal As always, its good practice to wear safety goggles and gloves when performing chemistry experiments.When you have finished the experiment, you can rinse the chemicals down the drain with water. To choose a subject, find a metal salt that is soluble in water, does not oxidize too quickly in air, yet can react with zinc or iron (or other metal) to form crystals. When I first began my Internship, I was very nervous. Ages 0-5 was a new population that I would have been working with and I had no prior experience. Therefore, I knew that there was a lot to learn in this new population. At first, it was very difficult because I had to adjust to the rhythm of the agency in regards of their work (i.e., client notes, home visits, and meetings). I am only there at the agency for 2 days so our duties as clinicians can become overwhelming if not managed on time and effectively. Familial ties are what has the most influence on a person. In The Mill on the Floss, written by Helen Edmundson, Tom was the most influential person in shaping Maggie because she loved him greatly. The next influential factor to obesity is the influence of our biological need and genetics. These factors play a large part in the obesity epidemic but the key factor to obesity is the fact that Americans are drastically decreasing their urges for physical fitness and health. Data has been collected from many different institutions and still the debate is on to see which group will inherit the blame of our nation’s obesity problems. Although many argue who is to blame for obesity, I believe that is in the hands of the individual and their poor diet techniques, biological factors, and their willingness to perform physical fitness. Dietary Techniques Obesity has become a crutch to the American way of life in the idea that we as individuals are not executing proper dietary techniques. The groups that are mainly targeted for obesity because of poor dieting techniques are low-income families throughout the United States. Obesity is on the rise in these families because more Americans are eating outside their homes at higher rates† (Bryan, 2006 p. 98). With the families going out to eat instead of staying home they are subject to a higher calorie intake than if they were to eat at home. The nutritional nature of fast food is unknown to many Americans because they have forfeited the need for knowledge on the matter. â€Å"Fast food restaurants and other fast food outlets are serving larger portions to consumersà ¢â‚¬  (Bryan, 2006, p. 98). This creates a dilemma for a person trying to stay within his/her healthy eating when a fast food business offers more food for cheaper than healthy food. In today’s society Americans are looking at the almighty dollar instead of their dietary needs. If it cost fifteen dollars to eat healthy food and it only cost six dollars for a value meal then 9 times out of 10 the consumer is going to choose the value meal over healthy food. I also believe that high advertisement of fast food and snack foods by large businesses influence the consumer to stray from their healthy diet. Many business have began to realize that American’s are becoming more and more aware of their dietary needs and are working to provide healthy foods at their restaurant chains. Biological Needs and Genetics The next factor we need to include in the reason of individuals ourselves being responsible for our obesity is biological needs and even our genetics. â€Å"Humans are hardwired, as a survival strategy, to like foods high in sugar, fat, and calories† (Brownell Nestle, 2006, p. 525). This may seem like it in not the individual’s problem and could be blamed on biology. This is an individual responsibility due to the fact that the human body can be controlled in a matter of survival. If one is desperate to survive and realizes that they are overweight they will cut back on excess calories. The closest example I have of survival is the urge to quit smoking because of all the scientific backing that states it can end your life. A responsible individual would quit smoking when he/she realizes they may die from the hazards. This survival response is the same with the obesity epidemic. Individuals are placed into danger when they become obese and face many different side effects. Some of these health hazards include an array of thirty different diseases. Although there are many individuals out there that are willing to help themselves get over this epidemic, many individuals are unable to overcome obesity due to their genetic make-up. Physical Fitness and Health There are many different contributing issues that play into the obesity epidemic but the key factor is the decline of physical fitness and overall health. Physical fitness has come to an all time low since the 1960’s and the evolution of the industrial age. Research data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that over the past 50 years the relationship between activity at work and obesity has grown closer together. â€Å"In 1960, nearly half the jobs in the private sector required at least moderate physical activity, but in 2010, less than 20% demanded this much physical work† (Harvard, 2012). With industrialization and technology on the rise many Americans are relying on technology to get them through their lives. Do not get me wrong, I believe that the use of technology makes this country an effective machine. The advances in technology has relieved stress off a man’s back and applied it to his stomach. The health hazards that follow obesity are not just a big belly but also high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, gallstones, gout, some cancers, bladder control issues, and psychological disorders (Bryan, 2006, p. 97). The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) reported an increase in the prevalence of obesity from 11. 1% in the 1970’s to 19. 3% in the early 2000’s† (Samper-Ternent Al Snih, 2011, p. 10-19). With the concern of citizens and their health on the rise I believe that the more information we get out to the people it will be beneficial to their survival. Discussion The epidemic that is obesity has become a modern day problem for America’s society. Some would even go as far to say that it could even be a crutch for he United States. â€Å"Increases in the prevalence of obesity have been observed in men and women, in all age groups, in all major ethnic groups, and at all educational levels† (Samper-Ternent Al Snih, 2011, p. 10). Individuals themselves could control and take responsibility for their overweight situation which would allow them to become more active and healthy. Odysseus ; Aeneas Essay If there is any possibility that a comparison could be made with the famousjourneys of Odysseus and Aeneas, it must be known that Aeneas is actually a hero insearch of his own soul while Odysseus is a hero trying to find his old life and in a sense,his old soul. The Aeneid is very much of a spiritual quest, which makes it unique inancient literature and in contrast with the Odyssey. Only Virgil admits to the possibilitythat a character can change, grow, and develop. In the storys earlier stages, the characterof Aeneas is obviously unsure of himself, always seeking instructions from his father orfrom the gods before committing himself to any course of action. In the underworld hesees a perspective of the future history of Rome down to the time of Augustus, and thatvision gives him the self-confidence to act on his own initiative. Comparatively, Odysseusis driven though his journey beginning with apparent self-confidence and continuing with avengeful vigor. He is sad, tired, always waiting for his father or the gods to tell him what to do. But Aeneas always fulfills his duty to his family, to his country, and to the gods, evenwhen he is depressed. He is never selfish. He always puts his responsibility to others first. In that way, his actions throughout his journey to the underworld were somewhat differentthat Odysseus. In Aeneas case, he too was as great of a survivor as Odysseus. In fact, he at leastmatches him in the way that he is one of those people who can lose everything and stillstart all over again. Aeneas goes from being a victim of the Greeks at Troy to becoming aconqueror in Italy. Virgils Aeneas is the first character in Western literature who actuallychanges and develops. His struggles help him discover who he is and what he thinks isimportant. If I had to name one quality that defines Aeneas throughout his journey, it is hisdevotion to duty, a quality that the Romans called pietas or piety. This quality keeps himgoing even when he would rather forget about his fate. Ultimately, this same qualitymakes him accept, even welcome, that fate. Because, when Aeneas finally realizes that allhis efforts will make the glorious Roman Empire possible, his love of his family and hiscountry are fulfilled. The result is that the Aeneas we see at the end of the Aeneid isdetermined, sure of himself, and confident that he knows what is right. He has become agreat leader who is able to impose order on people who display more selfish and unrulyemotions. Odysseus, as the classic definition of his name suggests, is truly and individual whocauses great trouble. Throughout the Odyssey, there are many direct and indirectcircumstances in which Odysseus wreaks havoc upon others. He leaves Troy, fights atthe island of Ismaros, and witnesses the sleepy life of the Lotos Eaters. He blinds and thentricks the one-eyed cannibal, Cyclopes, the son of Poseidon.
